Louis Vuitton Wins Legal Battle Against Van Cleef & Arpels: What You Need to Know
The world of luxury jewellery has just seen a major legal victory for Louis Vuitton against Van Cleef & Arpels. The French Court of Cassation has ruled in favour of Louis Vuitton, rejecting an appeal by Richemont International (the parent company of Van Cleef & Arpels). The case revolved around accusations that Louis Vuitton’s Colour Blossom jewellery collection unfairly copied the famous Alhambra design by Van Cleef & Arpels.
Why Did They Go to Court?
It all started back in 2017 when Richemont took legal action against Louis Vuitton. They claimed that Louis Vuitton’s Colour Blossom collection, launched in 2015, looked too similar to Van Cleef & Arpels’ iconic Alhambra jewellery, which has been a favourite for nearly 60 years.
Richemont argued that the four-petalled floral design used by Louis Vuitton resembled their clover motif, often set in a metal frame with semi-precious stones. On top of that, they felt the pricing and marketing strategies of the two brands were too similar, making it hard for customers to tell them apart. Richemont demanded the court stop Louis Vuitton from selling 31 of its jewellery pieces and asked for €15 million in damages.
Louis Vuitton’s Defence
Louis Vuitton defended itself by stating that the Colour Blossom design was inspired by its own historic monogram, which dates all the way back to 1896. The court agreed, saying that the motif and design elements were a natural evolution of Louis Vuitton’s existing brand style and not a deliberate copy of the Alhambra collection.
The court also pointed out that using semi-precious stones in metal settings is quite common in the luxury jewellery world. Because of that, no single brand can claim ownership over such widely used design features.
What Does the Ruling Mean?
This ruling is a big win for Louis Vuitton, but it also sends a clear message to the luxury industry: Brands can’t just claim ownership of common design elements unless they can prove that a competitor deliberately copied them. The decision allows luxury brands to expand their product lines without worrying too much about parasitic competition claims, as long as they build on their own existing designs.
